Exploring the range of values in painting and ink washing.
Materials:
Drawing materials: pencil, ink, water, paper or canvas.
Painting materials: tempera, diluted ink, spray paint, sponges, etc.
Method:
Select a color picture from your text; one that is fairly complex and has a wide assortment of values.
Using a format roughly 10" x 15", make a fairly accurate line drawing of the work in pencil. Shade the left half of the paper, reproducing the color values on that side of the work. Using an ink wash, create your own value pattern from the shapes on the right side. Use either decorative space (darks generally to the rear) or plastic space (darks generally to the front). According to your chosen concept, use line to emphasize the concept as necessary.
Note: Use illustration board or a paper compatible with ink but without a pronounced "tooth."
